Research and application of Fisetin

 Edit by Yongyuan Bio Amy
Fisetin is a natural flavonol found in many fruits and vegetables. It has many benefits, such as antioxidant, anticancer and neuroprotective effects.
I. Domestic and Foreign Studies on Fisetin
In an article published on the website of the Journal of the National Academy of Sciences, experts from Japan's Musashino University and the Solk Institute in the United States said that fisetin is a flavonoid contained in many vegetables and fruits. Previous studies have shown that the substance has a strong antioxidant effect, helping to delay aging, and new experiments by Japanese and American experts show that fisetin can also promote memory improvement. At present, studies at home and abroad have found that fisetin has many functions in various cancers, such as anti-oxidation, anti-inflammation, anti-cell proliferation, anti-metastasis, anti-angiogenesis, anti-allergy, anti-platelet and so on.
II. Sources of Fisetin
Fisetin (FIS, 3,3', 4', 7-tetrahydroxyflavone), also known as fesetron, is a natural flavonoid extracted from Rhus succedanea L and other plants of the family Lacqueraceae. This product also exists in vegetables and fruits, such as apples, persimmons, grapes, kiwifruit, strawberries, onions and cucumbers. Fisetin has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and other pharmacological properties. Its molecular formula is C15H10O6, and its molecular weight is 286.24. Its chemical formula was first described by Austrian chemist Josef Herzig in 1891.
Chemical formula: C??H??O?
Average Molar mass: 286.24 g/mol
Melting point: 626°F (330°C)
Density: 1.69 g/cm³

IV. Neuroprotective Effects of Fisetin
Researchers reporting in the journal Neuroscience Letters found that fisetin is neuro-protective and helps to maintain normal memory processes while inhibiting plaque formation around synapses. The International Journal of Oncology has published the work of Chinese scientists documenting how fisetin promotes the natural death of potentially malignant breast cancer cells. Fisetin is rapidly emerging as a powerful tool in the arsenal against a number of diseases associated with premature aging.
Researchers have found that fisetin operates in a very specific pathway to boost nerve cell glutathione levels and to reduce one of the most damaging free radicals, peroxynitrite. Scientists have determined that the natural compound protects nerve cells from damage during stroke, while at the same time maintaining vital energy production in the brain. Fisetin also prevents excess activation of specialized glial cells in the brain that helps deter inflammatory nerve damage, excitotoxicity, and declining neurological health. And fisetin reduces amyloid beta fiber accumulation to improve memory and thwart cognitive decline.

Fisetin has been studied by researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, which owns a patent for fisetin as a memory enhancer (U.S. Patent 7897637 B2). Laboratory and animal studies have found that it protects and promotes the growth of brain cells, and enhances memory in mice (Maher, Proc Natl Acad Sci 2006). A more recent study in mice showed that, taken orally, fisetin crossed the blood-brain barrier and appeared to promote brain cell communication in the hippocampus, a part of the brain associated with long-term memory (He, J Pharmacol Sci 2018).

A laboratory study also found that fisetin decreased senescence (cell death) in mouse and human fat cells, and decreased age-related disease and extended life-span in mice (Yousefzadeh, The Lancet 2018).
V. Health Benefits of Fisetin

VI. Recommended Intake
Nutrition experts recommend including fruits such as strawberries and mangoes as a source of dietary fisetin or supplementing with 50 mg per day to boost memory and high-level brain function and to promote natural cancer cell death. A small study in Japan in 1998 estimated that the average daily intake of fisetin in the country is only 0.4 mg.
