Saponins are an important group of active ingredients in traditional Chinese medicine, which are widely found in p. notoginseng, panax ginseng, licorice, bupleurum, astragalus, and other herbs. These components share common structural features, namely, they are composed of hydrophobic saponin elements and hydrophilic glycosyl groups linked by glycosidic bonds. Modern pharmacological studies have shown that many natural saponins have significant pharmacological activities in anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, anti-aging, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular protection and so on.

Anemarrhena has been used as a traditional Chinese medicine for more than 2,000 years. Modern medicinal chemistry studies have shown that saponins and their glycosides are the main components with a wide range of pharmacological activities, and there are more than 20 kinds of compounds identified, mainly Timosaponin A, nemarsaponin B, and Isosarsaparilla Saponin. Sapogenin is the product of the hydrolysis of saponin to remove the binding glycosyl group, mainly sarsasapogein, markosapogenin, negitogenin, diosgenin and so on.
