Cortex phellodendri Extract: According to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, Phellodendron refers to the following two: the dried bark of Phellodendron chinense Schneid. also called Chuan Hunagbai, which is mainly produced in Sichuan; and the dried bark of Phellodendron amurense Rupr., habitually called Guan Huangbai, which is mainly produced in Liaoning and Jilin.
 
Cortex phellodendri and its main chemical component berberine have antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic activities and can be used in functional cosmetics.Cortex phellodendri Extract is used in cosmetics for allergic dermatitis, eczema.
 
The application of Cortex phellodendri in cosmetics is similar to that of Coptidis Rhizoma, which can be used in combination with Coptidis Rhizoma and can be made into cosmetics without adding additional preservatives. It also can be used for eczema in combination with Stemona, Cnidium monnieri, Dictamni Cortex, Schizonepetae, fructus kochia sophora and Soptorae Flavescentis.
 
Cortex phellodendri is used in combination with Scutellaria, Dandelion for acne caused by damp-heat, and Phellodendron is also used with Scutellaria, Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Rhizoma Polygonati, and Anemarrhenae Rhizoma by ethanol extracts for acne.
