Butterfly pea Extract Description: 
Clitoria ternatea, commonly known as Asian pigeonwings, bluebellvine, blue pea, butterfly pea, cordofan pea and Darwin pea, is a plant species belonging to the Fabaceae family. It is a typical tropical vine that blooms throughout the year. Clitoria ternatea distributed to Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Taiwan, Fujian, Hainan, Yunnan, Zhejiang, Guangxi and Guangdong, etc. In Southeast Asia, Clitoria ternatea flower is used as a natural food colouring, Taiwanese also began to use it in cooking meals. In traditional Ayurvedic medicine, it is ascribed various qualities including memory enhancing, nootropic, antistress, anxiolytic, antidepressant, anticonvulsant, tranquilizing, and sedative properties.
  Clitoria ternatea is rich in Flavonoid, anthocyanins and phenolic compounds, which can stimulate antioxidant activity and help reduce oxidative stress caused by free radicals.
  Researches show that Clitoria ternatea extract contains the peptide with antibacterial activity , which can prevent diseases caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumonia and Escherichia coli.
  Confirmed by clinical trials, Clitoria ternatea has antioxidant effects, contribute to the formation of bone collagen and help maintain skin elasticity.

On September 2, 2021, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration(FDA) issued Regulation amending the color additive regulation to provide for the safe use of an aqueous extract of butterfly pea flower (Clitoria ternatea) as a color additive in various food categories. This regulation is effective October 5, 2021.
Currently, the only natural blue coloring approved by the US FDA is Spirulina Extract (2013) and Butterfly pea flower Extract (2021).
 
This additive is prepared by the aqueous extraction of dried butterfly pea flowers from Clitoria ternatea.
 
The aqueous extract of butterfly pea flower is used as a color additive in the following food categories: (1) alcoholic beverages (spirits, liqueurs, and flavored alcoholic beverages); (2) ready-to-drink non-alcoholic beverages; (3) liquid coffee creamers (dairy and non-dairy); (4) ice cream and frozen dairy desserts; (5) fruit preparation in yogurt; (6) chewing gum; (7) coated nuts; (8) hard candy; and (9) Soft candy.
